Cooperation with the IMP Chinese Academy of Sciences

On July 12, 2024, we had the pleasure of hosting a delegation from China, including Prof. Enge Wang (member and former vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former rector of Peking University), Prof. Hongwei Zhao (member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, former deputy director of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences), Dr Shan Sha (in charge of the human resources (HR) department at the Institute of Modern Physics) and Dr Song Guo (researcher at the Nuclear Physics Research Center at the Institute of Modern Physics).

The visit aimed to promote cooperation between SLCJ and the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was associated with the signing of a bilateral framework agreement on the matter between our institutions. The agreement provides for the implementation of joint research projects, exchange of scientific and technical staff as well as cooperation in educating students and doctoral students.

SLCJ was represented by Acting Director Dr Pawel Napiorkowski, Deputy Director for Technical Affairs Dr Jaroslaw Choinski, Dr Justyna Samorajczyk-Pyśk (responsible for the implementation of the agreement), Dr Agnieszka Trzcinska (head of the Nuclear Reactions Section), Dr. Julian Srebrny and MA Jolanta Matuszczak (responsible for organization on the part of SLCJ). The meeting was also attended by representatives of NCBJ, users of the Cyclotron – Ernest Grodner, PhD, and Adam Nałęcz-Jawecki, MA.

During the visit, our guests had the opportunity to visit the SLCJ and hear about the research conducted in the laboratory and plans. The activities of the Institute of Modern Physics in Lanzhou, China, were introduced to us by Prof. Hongwei Zhao in his presentation.

Thanks to the courtesy of Dr Krzysztof Mordynski – curator of the Warsaw University Museum, we were able to show our distinguished guests interesting exhibits illustrating the 200+ year history of our University, as well as listen to interesting facts about the oldest university buildings. All in the historic setting of the University’s main campus.

The culmination of the visit was a meeting of the Chinese delegation and SLCJ representatives with the UW Vice-Rector for Research Prof. Zygmunt Lalak, during which we discussed our plans and hopes for SLCJ’s cooperation with the Institute of Modern Physics.

Basic Training School on Accelerators BTS24

On June 18-27 2024, the International Basic Training School on Accelerators (BTS24) was held at the Heavy Ion Laboratory, University of Warsaw, organized in cooperation with the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology in Warsaw. Thanks to the financial support provided by the EURO-LABS project, 18 students from various countries worldwide could participate in the workshop.

Young physicists had the opportunity to expand their knowledge by participating in lectures given by local and international experts. The subjects presented in the lectures included the detection of ionizing radiation, introduction to gamma spectroscopy, basics of target preparation, fundamentals of nuclear reactions, production of radioisotopes for medical applications, and acceleration of heavy ions. The critical part of the workshop was acquiring practical laboratory skills and teamwork. Participants carried out independent experiments in small groups, using the unique research equipment available at the HIL Warsaw, and had a chance to show the obtained results in the presentation session closing the school.

Cooperation with the INP from Almaty in Kazakhstan

On June 25, 2024 we hosted a delegation from the Institute of Nuclear Physics from Almaty in Kazakhstan. Director General Dr. Sayabek Sakhiyev and Dr. Asset Shaimerdenov, head of the Atomic Energy Safety Problems Laboratory talked about continuing cooperation between our institutions and signed a bilateral framework agreement with the University of Warsaw.
